There May Be A Link Between Children’s Smiles And Bullying
MIDDLE SCHOOL CAN BE DIFFICULT… It can be even harder for those that are getting bullied or teased. If your child (or a child you know and care about) is being bullied we may be able to help.
Sometimes Children Are Bullied Because Of Their Teeth
A recent study of 11 and 12-year-old children in Jordan revealed that teeth were the most commonly targeted physical factor in bullying. Not just teeth in general, but orthodontic issues including:
- Gaps Between Front Teeth
- Missing Teeth
- Buck & Misaligned Teeth
This study was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics after a panel of top US orthodontists determined that this is a pressing problem in the United States as well. Many patients (and parents of patients) concerned with teasing and bullying from peers seek out orthodontic care to help.
Your child’s teeth are important for so many reasons. They’re not only vital for oral health but psychological health and self-esteem as well.
Is Your Child, Or A Child You Know, Feeling Self-Conscious Because Of His Or Her Teeth?
If so, we may be able to help take care of that smile. Effective orthodontic treatment can start early, which is why we recommend that children be evaluated around age 7. Even if a child’s mouth isn’t ready for braces, setting up a plan is important for their future.
Having a set plan often promotes confidence in children because the horizon is visible.
Watching The Change In Confidence
One of our favorite things is seeing the changes in children’s confidence. Bring your son or daughter (or someone you care for) in to meet with us and we will begin to plan ahead.
