How To Avoid Awkward Orthodontic Moments
IMAGINE YOU’RE ON A FIRST DATE, or an important dinner. We can’t help you with the small talk, or deciding what to wear. However, we can help you avoid some orthodontic faux pas.
Awkward Orthodontic Moment #1: Something Stuck In Braces
How do you know if something is stuck in your braces? The back of a spoon or your cell phone camera make good emergency mirrors.
Plan A: Swish some water around in your mouth.
Plan B: If it’s really stuck, you may want to excuse yourself to go to the restroom. Floss works best, or an interproximal brush. But if you don’t have special tools with you, use your fingers. You can also try folding up a paper towel and using the corner.
DON’T EVER use potentially dangerous tools in your mouth like pens, tweezers, keys, etc. that can damage teeth and gums, or braces.
But what if someone else has something in their teeth?
Here’s a tip:
Awkward Orthodontic Moment #2: Bad Breath
Plan A: Drink some water. Keep sugarless breath mints in your pocket or purse.
Plan B: Most bad-breath bacteria hangs out on your tongue. In a pinch, you can use a spoon as a tongue-scraper. (Discreetly, of course.)
Plan C: If you’re at a restaurant, you may be able to chew on your garnish (like parsley). Other good foods are celery, apples, or yogurt. (You’ll want to cut the apples up small for your braces, of course.)
Awkward Orthodontic Moment #3: Malfunctioning Wire Or Bracket
Plan A: ALWAYS have orthodontic wax handy just in case your braces cause irritation to your mouth. Apply wax as much as needed.
Plan B: If a wire or bracket is actually out of place, call us right away to set up an appointment. Not only is it uncomfortable, but it can set back your treatment time.
You can avoid most of the worst problems with these two tips:
1: Keep an orthodontic kit handy at all times (complete with a brush, orthodontic wax, and floss).
2: Follow our guidelines when it comes to food.
